A new treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED) has been discovered and launched in the UK by the US drugmaker after a UK study found that patients on Viagra and sildenafil can get the same benefit as those taking a placebo. The findings were presented at the International Conference on Men’s Health in London today.
The British researchers, led by Dr Laura Squire, led by Dr David Edwards, reported that the treatment was effective in improving erectile function in men with mild-to-moderate ED, when compared with a placebo. They also noted that men with ED who had taken sildenafil had a statistically significant improvement in their ability to get and keep an erection.
“When men with ED are diagnosed with a physical condition where sexual arousal is impaired and there is a delay in the onset of orgasm, this could be a marker for delayed sexual intercourse,” said Edwards. “These results could be of help in identifying patients with ED who may benefit from using sildenafil in this setting.”
Viagra, sildenafil, and other drugs used to treat ED include the Viagra® and sildenafil citrate tablets, as well as the Levitra® and Cialis® tablets.
Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, was approved in the UK in 2013 and is available on prescription in the US as well as on the European Union’s prescription drug benefit scheme.
The drug was launched in the UK last year and has already been available for other patients to take when trials were not complete. Sildenafil is also available as a generic drug under the brand name Revatio.
“The UK study suggests that the efficacy of Viagra and sildenafil in improving erectile function in men with mild-to-moderate ED may be of benefit to a number of patients,” said Edwards.
The findings were published in the, which also includes the British Medical Journal.
Erectile dysfunction is a condition affecting about 30 million men worldwide.1 In the UK, more than 10,000 men have suffered from ED since 1998.1,2 It affects around one in three men younger than 40, and around one in 10 of them are aged 40 or older.3A similar condition is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which occurs when an enlarged prostate gland (a type of gland in the urethra that makes urine pass more easily) becomes bigger causing symptoms such as difficulty urinating, weak urine flow, and pain in the lower abdomen.5
The condition is treated with an alpha-blocker medication called doxazosin, which works by relaxing muscles in the prostate and bladder. However, the drug does not treat ED in the same way as other drugs used to treat BPH.5
The treatment of ED in the UK has been criticised by the World Health Organisation, the European Commission, and other bodies. In 2002, the UK National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommended that doctors do not prescribe Viagra or sildenafil for BPH or ED when it has been found that patients taking both drugs had “substantial” risk factors for BPH, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and high levels of cholesterol.
The NICE recommended that doctors only prescribe the drugs sildenafil and tadalafil, and not the other two.
Dr Edwards said: “This is the first UK study to show a benefit of sildenafil or tadalafil for patients with mild to moderate ED compared with placebo. We believe this study will be of great value in guiding treatment decisions for patients who are experiencing ED.”
Sildenafil was initially approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in 1998, but the drug was only available to men over the age of 40.5 Sildenafil was initially approved to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension in 2003.5,6 Sildenafil is available on prescription in the US under the brand name Revatio.
Viagra, the generic version of Pfizer Inc., is one of the world’s top-selling erectile dysfunction drugs. And as a brand, it’s a big moneymaker. In 2013 alone, Pfizer was worth $50 billion, up nearly $7 billion from its $68 billion, or $6.6 billion. It accounted for almost half the U. S. sales of Pfizer’s Viagra, up nearly 10% from its 2014 sales.
In the same year that Pfizer’s Viagra hit the market, a new drug called Cialis was approved for men with ED. The drug was the first approved for men with ED to treat. The company said that by the end of 2013, it had found the right drug to treat ED. Pfizer’s Viagra is also on the U. Food and Drug Administration’s List of Essential Medicines.
Now, a Pfizer spokeswoman said, “Viagra is a very effective, safe drug, and has made a significant progress.” She said that Pfizer continues to make efforts to get the drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration and will continue to keep it on the market.
But a spokesperson for Pfizer said, “We are not making any decisions about whether or not we will continue to market Viagra or any other drug that treats ED.” They said Pfizer will continue to make progress on its ED treatment.

India’s largest generic drug retailer said Monday that its new generic version of Viagra will be available in its stores in the U. S. on Monday.
The retailer said that the new generic version of Viagra will be available in stores beginning at 2 to 4 p.m. Monday and starting Monday at the current price of $30 to $60.
Pharmaceutical companies also are planning to introduce a generic version of Viagra by late next year.
The drugmaker said the new generic version of Viagra will cost $30 to $60, while its current version, which was launched earlier this year, will cost $60 to $80.
In its latest decision, the U. Food and Drug Administration said it will continue selling the drug in U. stores, but will offer its generic version of the drug at low prices from the manufacturer.
“The generic Viagra will be available in its stores in the U. beginning Monday,” Dr. Nachum Katlowitz, who oversees the FDA’s approval process for drugs, said in a.
Viagra is approved for treatment of erectile dysfunction and is the first of its kind to treat a rare sexually transmitted infection.
About a year ago, the FDA said it detected the bacteria in patients who used the drug, which is not the active ingredient of the drug.
“This is a very important indication for the FDA to know how much it can treat patients with sexual problems and to have that information readily available to physicians,” said Janet Woodcock, a teaspoon of the FDA-approved drug. “This is a very important indication for the FDA to know how much Viagra can treat patients with sexual problems and to have readily available information to physicians.”
The FDA said its earlier concerns about the drug led to a lack of approval for other sexual health treatments, including:
“The FDA is taking a very serious risk when it comes to approving drugs,” said Matt Laperi, a U. health official who works with the FDA.
The drugmaker said it would be reviewing the FDA’s approval process for new drugs.
“Our decision to be specific is important, but we will review the details of the FDA review in our second quarter and we look to what we have learned from the approval process and what we have learned from our conversations with the FDA,” said Laperi.
The FDA has not approved Viagra’s approval for use in treating erectile dysfunction, but Viagra’s patent for sildenafil has expired.
It’s the first drug to be approved for the treatment of the sexually transmitted infection in the U. S., said Ingampa, who oversees the agency’s approval process.
The drugmaker said its decision to sell the drug in U. stores is “in line with a lot of people’s health,” the company said.
“We are extremely pleased with the FDA’s decision to approve Viagra,” said Ingampa.
“This is an important milestone for us as we continue to develop the drug,” Laperi said.
Viagra is the first of a new class of drugs to treat the underlying problems in which people take certain medications, including erectile dysfunction drugs.
The other two brand-name drugs are the older HIV drug lopinavir and the more-expensive HIV vaccine drug atazanavir.
The FDA also announced late last month that it had approved Viagra’s generic application to market in the U. by the end of the year.

Viagra, a non-stimulating drug, inhibits the breakdown of cGMP and consequently increases blood flow to the penis, which enables you to achieve and maintain an erection. It is used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) and pulmonary hypertension. It belongs to a group of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors.
